Prologue

 Author's POV

20 years ago

It was dark outside, and the mansion was unusually quiet. Four-year-old Jannat was sleeping soundly in her room.

Suddenly, she shifted in her sleep, a small frown appearing on her face. Something felt missing.

She slowly opened her eyes and looked around, unable to find her babysitter, who was usually beside her.

"Aunty?" she called, but no answer came.

Getting down from the bed, she picked up her plushie panda and took tiny steps towards the door.

As the opened the door, she came out in the empty corridor. It was engulfed in darkness and not even a single soul could be seen.

Clutching the plushie closely to herself she walked further. "Aunty..." she called again'

Her tiny footsteps echoed through the empty corridor. She looked into several rooms, but all of them were empty.

"Aunty..." Her voice was growing smaller. She looked around, hoping to find someone familiar.

Suddenly, she heard something. A faint noise, like someone was arguing. She ran, following the sounds. They grew louder.

Jannat came into the hall, but seeing the view in front of her, she hid behind a pillar.

Bang.

She jumped with fear. Her panda nearly slipped from her hands.

Someone had been shot.

She saw the face of each and every person present in the hall. Her little heart began beating faster. She couldn't understand what was happening.

Another gunshot echoed.

She ran towards the staircase. Her small hands gripped the railing as she looked down into the darkness.

She accidentally hit the flower vase, and someone saw her.

Jannat froze.

The person stared at her.

"Jannat?"

Her eyes widened. She stumbled backwards.

"No..."

Tears were already filling her eyes. She ran down the stairs.

She didn't know who to trust.

She didn't know what was happening. She only wanted to find someone who could make everything okay.

But before she could reach the bottom, her foot slipped.

The world tilted.

Her panda flew from her hands, and she rolled down the staircase.

A deafening explosion tore through the mansion. Within a few minutes, the entire mansion was swallowed by flames.

"HEAVEN!"

Twelve-year-old Avyaan came running through the chaos, his eyes searching desperately through the flames.

"Jannat!"

He tried to rush towards the staircase, but a pair of hands grabbed him from behind.

"Bhai, stop." little Reyansh urged him.

"Let me go, she's inside." 

"You can't go in there." 

"I have to find her." His voice broke as he fought against Reyansh's grip.

Flames continued to spread, glass shattered and smoke filled the corridors. Before Avyaan could go back inside a large pillar collapsed blocking the entrance.

Avyaan froze.

His eyes remained fixed on the burning mansion.

"Heaven..."

He helplessly stared at the burning mansion. He couldn't do anything. There was no one he could turn to for help.

One night.

 It took only one night to ruin two happy families, one night to break everyone, one night to shatter their whole world.

Here is the prologue.
